WASTE MANAGEMENT AS A PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE

 Waste disposal has become a rampant issue concerning the population's health.In most areas the wastes are disposed all over the area without a concern about human health.Garbage are disposed along the streets anyhowly and according to the health guidelines the disposal should be done in an organised manner in order to reduce the effects on the human health.We should be aware of the effects of improper waste disposal  concerning their health.

               KITCHEN WASTES

 Wastes from our kitchen's e.g food leftovers, fruits peelingsp and liquid wastes are very unhygienic to our surroundings when carelessly disposed.The wastes when disposed to a landfill causes   green house emission of gases;methane, which is  25 times powerful than carbon emissions. They also cause infestations of rodents that causes diseases and sicknesses,e.g, the virus Salmonella that causes typhoid. 

  In order to reduce the kitchen wastes mainly caused by food wastage:

           -We should make a list to avoid too much food buying and impulse buying.

           -Donating extra foods will be a good  idea to avoid reduce food wastage.

           -We should prepare enough foods.

AGRICULTURAL WASTES

These are mainly produced from farming activities.

Examples include;animal production wastes e.g animal carcasses,damaged feeders and beddings,crop production solid waste, e.g, crop residues and husks,on farm medical solid waste generated from use of drugs , insecticides(they include wrappers ,disposal needles and syringes),and chemical wastes ,e.g, pesticides,insecticides and herbicides.

Effects  of indiscriminate disposal of  agricultural wastes

•Indiscriminate dumping of agricultural wastes causes blockage of waterways which results to floods hence causing loss of lives and properties.

•Health and environmental implication _Burning of generated wastes results into pollution due to the gases produced.This is a great effect on human lives and also leads to rise of global attention although the wastes can be recycled to improve soil fertility suitable for agricultural production.

•Effects on animals_Improper disposal of chemicals such as pesticides,insecticides are dangerous to animals since they  can consume  leading to death.

Control

Farmers apply right quantity of fertilizers and pesticides and and store farm produce in a good way to reduce the rate of wastes.

INDUSTRIAL WASTES

Due to the rapid development of advanced technology the issue of pollution has become a serious effect to the human health.As the industries become large scaled and increase of manufacturing units pollution has become very rampant and it has to be brought under control.

Causes 

Inappropriate waste disposal methods_Wastes like chemical solvents used in dyeing and tanning  industries ,untreated gases and liquid waste being released into the environment affects a large percentage of lives

For example, the chemical solvents  are mostly disposed on water sources ,this contaminates the water which is used as a source of drinking water for many .And the chemical when comes into contact with soil it reduces the quality of soil.

Inefficiency of waste disposal_Long term exposure to polluted air and water causes chronic health problems and lowers the air quality in surrounding areas which causes many respiratory disorders like asthma.

Effects

•Global warming _It has been increasing at a steady pace due to the to the rise industrial wastes produced especially the smoke and greenhouse gases,e.g, carbonIV oxide gas.Increase global warming leads to tsunamis , floods and hurricanes.

•Wildlife extinction_Industrial pollution continues to cause significant damage to the Earth and all of its inhabitants due to chemical wastes,pesticides and radioactive materials. This affects wildlife and ecosystems and disrupts natural habitats . 

•Water pollution_The wastes dumped into rivers and oceans has greatly impacted many lives since the water is used by the humans in drinking and doing domestic activities .Farmers also use water for irrigation purposes and this affects the quality of food that is produced.

Control

•Adopting new technology; efficient training of employees for safe use  and development  of better technology for waste disposal in order to help control the pollution from industries.

•Recycling of polluted water from the industries  as an effort to reduce pollution . 

•Proper treatment of industrial wastes  by developing and implementing adequate facilities for handling industrial wastes .

•Consideration of location of the sites and the potential impact on the surrounding environment.

WASTE DISPOSAL IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE PUT IN ACTION ALL THE TIMES FOR A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT.GABBAGE COLLECTION SHOULD BE DONE,RECYCLING AND REUSING OF  SOME WASTES.
